BHPVIEW – Motivation and Philosophy

 

BHP wanted a data viewer that could be used to quickly browse large quantities (>10GB volumes) of data, and could also be used to view different seismic attributes as well as layer-based models, all in the same set of synchronized windows.

 

In addition, the viewer had to have the same look and feel on different UNIX, Linux and Windows platforms.

 

BHP did not want to pay for a large, difficult-to-program and expensive-to-maintain C++ style viewer.

 

The viewer had to work with behind-the-scenes Seismic UNIX programs that were being developed to provide quick random-access to large volume seismic datasets.

 

The viewer had to be an efficient user of resources. It shouldn’t have to load an entire 3D volume just to browse a few locations.
